This patch is aimed at addressing feedback from new players about the pace of the game and its resource system.

The main change is a new “Difficulty” tab in the settings, with two options that affect the Story Campaign only:

  • Min Hand Size: Instead of drawing 1 card per turn, you can draw 1, then keeping drawing until you reach a minimum hand size. You can set this anywhere from 2 to 5.

  • Extra Titanium: You can start with up to 2 extra Titanium income.

The game is intended to be a more slow and careful resource-constrained experience than some deckbuilders, more akin to Magic the Gathering than Slay the Spire. I believe that players coming from Slay the Spire (and similar games) are not immediately grasping where all the strategic levers are, which leaves them feeling like the experience is slow and punishing. I wrote a LOT about this here https://www.flaregatenetwork.com/blog/new-player-resource-complaints and here https://www.flaregatenetwork.com/blog/roguelike-deckbuilder-tropes-part-3.

It is my hope that these two new settings will let these players shape their own experience, letting them work deeper into the Story Campaign so they can uncover what makes Flaregate Network fun and different.

Ultimately, I don’t plan to change the core Magic-the-Gathering-like resource system, as this would basically be designing an entirely new game from the ground up, but implementing these two settings was a very cost-efficient way for me to meet some subset of players where they are.

Also note that I am still planning changes for the roguelike side to address this sense of resource constraint, but the approach will be totally different. The roguelike will never have difficulty settings players can adjust, aside from the rank they choose at the start of the run.

Other Small Changes

  • Unit bars (for hit points and stuff) are now on by default. This only affects new players, as existing players have the state of this setting in their save data.

  • I removed 1 Lancer Bay in favor of 1 Lone Anarch in The Pirate King’s rank 5+ deck.
